Nurse.Fighter.Boy

I caught the amazing film Nurse.Fighter.Boy when it played at TIFF last September. I loved it for many reasons and felt an instant connection to it (it might have been the boy with a single mother or the fact that it was shot in the East end of Toronto or maybe it was just because it's a great film). I recommended it as one of my top five films to be seen during the festival and jumped at the chance to interview the director (Charles Officer) and some of the cast.

Now that the film has opened in Toronto and Vancouver I thought it would be great to get Charles back in front of the camera talking about the locations he used in the film. Check out video below and read the article here.

Enjoy.

If you're in Toronto catch Nurse.Fighter.Boy at the Royal or AMC Yonge & Dundas.

Food blogging

No, BAMCAT is not about to become a food blog (a food blog with "cat" in the title doesn't sound appetizing to me). This post is about a friend who is food blogging and doing a great job at it. Interesting articles (not just recipes), frequent updates and a love of the topic she's blogging about all make it an excellent source. Plus it's called Plum Tart which just sounds cool.

Check it out and let her know what you think in the comments.

Enjoy!

Neil Gaiman Interview/'Coraline' Review

We started a new feature on CityNews.ca today called His Take/Her Take. This is a weekly movie review from a male and female perspective. First film up is the 3D stop-motion animated film Coraline (it rocks and everyone should see it). You can read the review here.

My partner-in-crime Suzanne also got to talk to Neil Gaiman (who wrote the book Coraline) about his thoughts on the adaptation. You can watch the interview below and read it here.

Enjoy!

Clipse rolls through T.O.

Hip-hop duo Clipse hit Toronto a few weeks ago for a show at CiRCA and a signing at Livestock. We got an interview with them before sound check as well as photos from the show. Check it all out here (you can watch the interview below as well).

Enjoy!

Miss Piggy does Peaches

Peaches is a raunchy Canadian punk chick (and former roommate of Feist). Miss Piggy is a Muppet. Dub Peaches track Fuck the Pain Away over clips of Miss Piggy and you have one of the funniest videos on the net.

Batmania Hits Toronto!

The marketing for The Dark Knight is in full around Toronto. If you're not seeing the bat logo flying in the sky, you're seeing the Batmobile parked in and around the club district. Check out some photos I snapped this afternoon of the craziness.

Time Lapse Fun

One of the coolest features of the Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital ELPH is the ability to shoot time lapse video. Check out my 30 second test below (shot at the parkette near King & John in Toronto).

Sluts 'R' Us

This is not an April Fool's joke. Toys 'R' Us wants your precious, little, darling five-year-old girl to look like a slut! How else can you explain them selling lower back tattoos in vending machines?

Can't wait for them to start marketing the Morning After Emergency Play Kit!

Spiral Beach is boss!

Made of Stone by Spiral Beach is currently my favourite song on the planet (the band is climbing my list fast too). Hopefully I'll be able to see them when they pass through Toronto next - from what I've been told these guys put on an amazing live show.

Check out the rad video for Made of Stone below.

Death to Arcades, Top Indie Toronto Video Stores, and Where's Jimmy Hoffa?

It's been a long time since I posted something on BAMCAT. Reason being - I'm doing so much cool stuff for my real job at CityNews.ca lately. Here are three examples:

Game Over: Video Arcades Face Extinction
- this was a story written by Michael Talbot at CityNews.ca. Although we could not get video to go with the piece his photos tell the story almost better than video could. It also caused a stir at BlogTO (a great Toronto-based blog) and they even wrote a piece of their own on arcades.

Indie Toronto Video Stores - Suzanne Ellis and I put this five-part series together featuring the best independent video stores in Toronto. Sadly, the day after we profiled Suspect Video it burned to the ground (along with many other historical stores on Queen St. W. in Toronto). Queen Video, Marquee Video, Black Dog Video, and The Film Buff (story on Friday) were all included in the series.

Where's Jimmy Hoffa? Former Mob Driver Weighs in on the Mystery - Meeting Marvin Elkind didn't really affect me until he told us where he believes Jimmy Hoffa is buried. He could be the most interesting person I have ever met as well as the scariest.

That's just three out of almost 50 original pieces we have done in the last month. I'll get back to updating BAMCAT with fun links and videos shortly.
